there are a lot of nice places to stay in new york. there are also a lot of nice places to eat. what there aren’t a lot of are nice places to stay with a greasy burger joint hidden inside. inside the lobby of le parker meridien, which is a beautiful hotel just below the park, looks like an hotel lobby.
however, there’s that little rope you may notice. peak around it and you’ll see a neon burger and probably a line of people. with witty signs as you walk in, it’s a pretty straight-forward burger joint, and appropriately named: “Burger Joint.”
I waited in line for a good 10 – 15 minutes in a tiny hallway then into a crowded hallway. the wait was made harder by the kid who kept hitting me, but easier listening to those around. in front of me was a couple from denmark who struck up a conversation with a composer for the musical titanic.
after i ordered my meal – cheeseburger, plain and an 8 oz diet coke, no ice – i didn’t have a long wait until my burger was ready. as i finished it (which was quickly because i had spent the entire morning taking in the MoMA), i realized it was good. no great, but good. i would go back.
the burger itself lacked flavor, but the cheese was good and the bun was good. the adventure and experience was great as well. my meal was just over $13, which is more than mcdonald’s but less than a fancy-schmansy patty.
if you have a chance, check out burger joint. you’ll see lots of interesting people, and get some good food.
