Staying Motivated in Winter

Staying motivated seems so much harder in winter months, doesn’t it? Sure, the nicer it gets the more you want to be outside and be distracted. But for me, staying motivated is extra difficult in the winter when it’s cold and I just want to curl up on the couch with some hot cocoa and a fire (or the Netflix fireplace for me). This winter in particular I have been staying extremely busy, which means any time that I am home I just want to relax. But, I need to actually use that time too, sometimes. There are a few things I do to stay motivated.

Staying Motivated
Curate my space

Wherever I find myself spending most of my time needs to be curated. This helps me stay motivated because I can look around and see things that make me happy. In addition, I have very minimal decoration in my room so that I don’t want to spend to much time there. Currently in my living room which is also my workspace, I have postcards, artwork I like, a few canvases, some squirrel statues, flowers, and books. So. Many. Books. Somehow, my books help me stay motivated. I can pick them up whenever I need inspiration, or even just a book. And then there are times I am actually in need of one of my books, and in that case having a lot of them in my workspace makes life so much easier. Here are some of my favorite books to keep on hand: Steal Like an Artist, The Elements of Style, Manolo Blank Drawings and Capture Your Style.

Candles

This goes hand-in-hand with curating my space. Candles that aren’t too strongly scented are my favorite. I have been very into lavender candles recently. I also am digging Lilly Pulitzer candles. By burning one Lilly candle, and one lavender candle, my place smells citrusy but still relaxing. Here are some candles I would suggest:

Doodling

Something I did this summer was everyday I would arrive to work a few minutes early, sit on the stoop, pull out my sketchbook and just doodle. Some days I’d just write the date, other days I’d write down quotes that I had been thinking of recently, or maybe I’d just draw an mandala. This really seemed to get me ready for the day. My brain felt amped and I felt more motivated. Now, if I am having trouble either getting work done, or I just need to get myself feeling motivated, doodling really makes me feel better.

 

Being Comfortable

Finally, my space is happy, my mind is open and then I like to make sure I’m physically comfortable. I personally like to sit with a can of LaCroix (orange or tangerine, preferably) or sparkling drink (I’ve linked my very favorite below), my cutesy slippers and some comfy clothes. Generally for me that is [high-waisted] leggings or sweatpants and an oversized sweatshirt. And, I noticed that I don’t like to take the time to do my makeup when I’m just going to sit around, but I feel more confident an prepared to take on anything!

Staying Motivated

New York in 20 Hours

You only have 20 hours to see the sites during your visit to New York City. What do you see?

My friend Anna Ehlen and I just had this issue. She had never been to New York City, but is living in Pennsylvania for the summer, so I invited her up for the weekend. It worked out, but only for 20 hours. Here’s how we made it work….

First, I picked her up at Penn Station shortly after 8 pm on a Friday. We immediately went back to where I’ve been living in the Upper East Side, put her stuff down and then went to the roof. We enjoyed the view of the city, and then left for Times Square. Even with only 20 hours, I wanted to make sure Anna saw it. At night it was a perfect opportunity to see everything lit up. We then walked to Rockefeller Center and headed home.

The next morning we slept in and then left around 10:30 am to get breakfast/brunch. Less than 6 hours left. of our 20 hoursWe took the Q train from 72 to Canal (like I do every morning for work) and went to Nickel & Diner, off Hester & Center.

After a yummy brunch, we walked around the area. This allowed us to see Chinatown and Little Italy (and walk past my workplace!). We meandered the streets before heading north through NoLita and toward SoHo. Walking along Spring St gave us the chance to go in some stores and boutiques including Aerie’s pop-Uup, which I highly suggest.

NYC in 20 Hours

Wandering the streets of SoHo turned into NoHo to Washington Square Park. Then we touched Greenwich Village and caught the subway up to the south end of Central Park. Anna has never eaten at Le Pain so I figured it would be a easy place to stop. From there we walked north and then east through the park to get home. About 16 miles total!

Only 20 hours. But we saw so much. 16 miles stretches out for a lot of streets walked. A lot of sights seen. This was a stretch from 72 St to Canal St. We saw a lot, got our sleep and still got to eat yummy food. Anna experienced the city. We may not have gone on the Staten Island Ferry or gone up the Empire State Building, but Anna got to see what a lot of the city. Definitely not all of it though.

My advice, give yourself more than 20 hours if you can. But sometimes it’s just not possible.

The adventure to Smorgasburg  was dreary and drizzly, but Chad, Julio, Jamie and I had some delicious food in Prospect Park which made it a little brighter. Smorgasburg happens weekly throughout the warmer months in Prospect Park on Sundays. It started in Williamsburg and still happens there every Sunday.

Prospect Park’s Smorgasburg is super easy to get to. Especially because of the Q (which I am obsessed with), we took the Q from the Upper East Side all the way to Prospect Park. From there it was just a little bit into the park and suddenly delicious smells were all around us.  It’s a great event to go to if you are just in the city for a little bit or if you live here! There area also a bunch of families and doggies if you like that.

I have to admit, all the different lemonades and juices kept catching my eye and I tried a few different ones…oops. But, my favorite by far was the mango orange guava one. Delicious and very sweet 🙂

Aside from Smorgasburg, the park itself is beautiful to walk around. It’s a great option for a quick trip to Brooklyn and an excuse for yummy food, some exercise and nature.

Staying Motivated

Dinner at Olive + Oak

It finally happened. I finally had a chance to be home and eat at Olive + Oak and get a reservation! The night before I left for New York, my mother and I headed to Old Webster for a nice dinner (and to celebrate an early Mother’s Day). I have to admit, my hopes were high. And I was 100% prepared to be let down, at least a little. But honestly, all this meal did was raise my expectations for future dining there more.

The menu changes every day. But, chances are, you will find something  that you like and that you can eat. The staff knows what’s happening and can tell you where a lot of their items come from, and not just the meat and the wines.

My mother and I started with lemon gnocchi. I love gnocchi but have made the mistake of ordering whole dishes of it before. The portion for this starter was perfect. There were just enough flavors for an appetizer. Gnocchi and bread from Union Loafers kept us ready for our meals, but still hungry.

I had the beef tenderloin and it was perfectly cooked and delicious, and my mother had oysters which she enjoyed as well. We decided to go for it and also have dessert which was also delectable.

Honestly, I’m so happy I had the chance to go to Olive + Oak before I left for the summer. I can’t wait to go back and hope I find a place just as great in NYC.
